| Indonesia |
| Indonesia is the world's fourth
largest producer of coffee. Coffee came into the
country through Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). |

| The Portuguese brought in the |

| Robusta variety,
while the Arabica was introduced by the Dutch
Colonial Government. |
| |
At present only 10% of the crop is Arabica,
and the number of quality beans available for the
specialty coffee industry is also limited.
Even though this coffee comprises a small percentage of total production, Arabica coffees from this region are considered some of the best in the world.
Indonesian coffees are usually marketed under the name of the island of origin like Celebes, Sumatra, Sulawesi,
Java and Timor.
At best, most of them are distinguished by full body,
rich flavor, and a low-toned, vibrant acidity. At worst,
many display unpleasant hardness or musty defects.
Others display an earthiness which many coffee lovers
enjoy and some deplore. |
